HISTORY
1-CRACKED PLATES
[CW: Domestic Abuse] Billy’s earliest memories are of his family fighting. There isn’t a time he can remember where they were not fighting. His father Neil Hargrove fought with his mother over anything, including about Billy, how he looked, how he acted. He was ever enough for his father. During this time, Billy witnessed verbal and physical domestic abuse against his mother, and presumably against himself. He did not have a role model or protector for long. His mother chose to leave when he was between eight or ten years old, and she did not take him with her, leaving him with an abusive father. This lack of safety at home and parental abandonment has made Billy distrustful of others and has impacted how he deals with others: typically through violence and intimidation.
2-ONE BAD NIGHT
[CW: Homophobia, f-slur, fighting, drugging] On an evening in November 1984, Max slipped out of their home on Cherry Street while Billy was getting ready for a date. When Neil discovered she was missing, he blamed Billy’s preening, “like a faggot,” for her being able to slip out. He shoved Billy, hit his face, and demanded he find her, and when he left, we see Billy’s armor break. He cries. Neil’s domestic abuse seemingly turned to Billy once his mother left, and when he finally comes across Max at a stranger’s house with a group of boys, he intimidates them by physically shoving Lucas Sinclair. When Steve Harrington hits him, it kicks off a powder keg and vicious fight that ends with Steve’s face being turned to pulp until Max drugs Billy. Ultimately, she intimidates him by threatening his balls with a bat and tells him to leave her friends alone. He seemingly does, ignoring her at home. By season 3, Max is comfortable enough to have her friend spy on Billy, and in season 4 clarifies that their relationship was tumultuous, but that she wanted a real sibling.
3-WHERE IS MY MIND
In summer 1985, Billy Hargrove rules Hawkins’ pool. He stays in Hawkins, even though he hates it, even though he is now 18. He makes a date with a married woman, but never reaches the motel. Billy is possessed by an interdimensional demon the Stranger Things kids refer to as a Mindflayer and encounters it while it looks like a replica of himself. He kidnaps fellow lifeguard Heather and allows her to be possessed, as well as her parents and perhaps 30–40 other Hawkins residents. Doing so grants him physical prowess, makes him vulnerable to heat, and makes his mission simple: kill El and her friends. He and the monster almost manage it, but El is able to enter Billy’s memories, pulling up one of him surfing with his mother when he was much younger. Billy is able to regain control long enough to save El, but not quickly enough to avoid being impaled by multiple fleshy appendages from the physical Mindflayer. Billy dies alone, without friends, coughing out an apology to his step-sister Max.

MONSTER
THE HYPOCHLORITE

Billy’s monstrous form is poisonous. As his irritability rises (if you can imagine that), Billy craves connection. Billy Hargrove does not want to be alone, he wants to commune and consume others, make them part of the same brood, not unlike the Mindflayer, but now for Billy’s greedy needs. For a time, a monstrous Billy might look normal, clean, fresh-faced. It’s a lie, and the form cannot be held for long, but it may try to sweet-talk or argue, kiss or be kind, until he can get close enough to feed.

Under the glamor, the Hypochlorite is wane and in the early stages of rot, eyes as black as his veins, no sclera, and his body less flesh and blood, instead powered by the harsh, inhuman chemicals pumping through him. He’s dripping, bleach-like goo pooling from his mouth.

The further along in the transformation, the more ashen he becomes, puking up sharp smelling fluid, not unlike the bleach and fertilizer he consumed while possessed by the Mindflayer, then his veins begin to blacken.

If he nabs his prey, he bullies his way inside their mind, forcing them to relive their worst memories before he feeds on them, leaving mindless husks in his wake. A transformed Billy is ice cold to the touch, and heat will drive him away or kill him. Once killed or de-transformed, the energy he sucked from his husks will return to them.
